The Indian Premier League (IPL) has a special set of rules that make the tournament exciting and different from traditional cricket leagues.
The IPL introduces several unique rules such as strategic time-outs, the Impact Player rule, and advanced decision review systems that make the tournament more competitive and exciting for fans.
In every innings there are two time-outs of 2.5 minutes. The bowling team takes one between the 6th and 9th overs while the batting team takes the other between the 13th and 16th overs. Teams may be punished if umpires detect abuse of this provision.
DRS has been applied to all IPL matches since 2018. Each team receives two reviews per innings. Starting with the 2023 season, teams can also review wides and no-ball decisions.
If a bowling team fails to complete its overs within the assigned time, only four fielders can remain outside the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs. Match referees may also impose financial fines.
Each team can nominate five substitute players and use one Impact Player per match. The substitution can occur before the start of an innings, at the fall of a wicket, when a batter retires, or at the end of an over.
Teams can announce their playing XI either before the toss or immediately after the toss.
If a fielder or wicket-keeper makes unfair movement during the delivery of the ball, a five-run penalty is awarded and the ball is declared dead.
A maximum of four overseas players can be included in the starting XI. If an overseas player is used as an Impact Player, only three overseas players may be in the original XI.
Each team squad can include up to 25 players, with a maximum of eight overseas players.
From the 2024 season, bowlers are allowed to deliver two bouncers per over. This rule was previously tested in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The IPL prize money distribution system will commence its operation at the start of the 2025 season. The prize money structure rewards the top performing teams of the tournament and recognizes their excellent performance throughout the competition.
The prize money distribution system will include different reward amounts for the top four teams of the tournament. The winning team receives the highest prize money followed by the runner-up, while the third and fourth placed teams are also rewarded for their performance in the league.
