Champions by Design: RCB Silence All Critics with Back-to-Back IPL Crowns

📅 2026-06-01 • ✍️ IPL 2026

A stadium's death is almost a silent one, not a silence of boredom, but a silence of awe. Royal Challengers Bengaluru were going against Gujarat Titans in the 18th over of their match at IPL 2026 Ahmedabad when Virat Kohli steered home Arshad Khan to make the victory a reality. It was at that moment when Virat Kohli hit Khan through the mid-off line in the 18th over, that the Ahmedabad Stadium had touched that point and crossed it before the result was sealed by the five-wicket triumph of the winning side. Some of the gathered 110,000 appeared to hold their breath in anticipation until it erupted in a wave.

RCB finished on 161/5 in 18 overs, having scored a full 12 over an hour ahead of GT's 155/8. It was efficient, measured, devastatingly professional – no longer needs to impress anyone.

The first thing you do is toss that sets the tone

Once again, the season's hallmark of chasing first was clearly on display in the form of the RCB captain who was proved correct at the toss and chose to chase. The choice proved fruitful in just 3 overs. Last over, GT were 25/2 when Josh Hazlewood struck out Shubman Gill for 10 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned a short Sai Sudharsan. In the third over, Hazlewood painted Shubman Gill for 10 and in the fourth over, Bhuvneshwar Kumar sent back a short Sai Sudharsan to Liyaquit, leaving GT 26/2. The Islanders were never able to land the eye-havering blow as the Titans got their powerplay due: 45/2 in six over.

Nishant Sindhu (20 off 18) and Jos Buttler started to regain momentum, but the worry of wickets was always there and prevented GT from speeding up. Buttler was brilliantly stumped by Jitesh Sharma off Krunal Pandya, and then was soon gone those mismatches of Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan after Rasikh Salam Dar knocked them down in quick succession, which meant that all eyes were set on how RCB would fight the match. What Rasikh posted in the scoring is his best bowling all evening – 3/27.

Washington Sundar's Fighting Half-Century

To welcome them, they came out with a strong performance but unfortunately the one who did not get swept away was Washington Sundar. The all-rounder guided GT to 155/8, a result he'd be capable of against other teams, on another day, in a different world, off 50 not out in 37 balls. Against this RCB side it was around 20 off their targets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 2/29 to catch up with Kagiso Rabada with 28 wickets to date. The Purple Cap armrooted it the whole over, culminating in one last scalp on behalf of Rabada to get a leg up when the very last over arrived. It'll be a consolation in the night of hisard et der.

Kohli: Finale in the making

If not anything, any other topic that can be written about can be written about Virat Kohli! But on Sunday evening, it was revealed again. It was only at the top of the order that he unleashed his attack on Rabada, the sound of 110,000 fans adding pressure, but wrangling energy. Venkatesh Iyer's fiery 32 off 16 ensured RCB enjoyed a great powerplay start, getting to 70/2 at the end of 15th over.RCB's explosive powerplay start on these numbers, with Venkatesh Iyer, scoring 32 off 16, despite the two wickets he had taken.

RCB, however, got two wickets off a double blow from Rashid Khan in the ninth over that guaranteed a 3-run stand was in danger of imminent collapse, but, indeed, they were handing in two wickets, one to each of Kohli and the other to Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya, who were outed in succession. It was a turn-around moment for Kohli in the game. Anybody who has seen him run hard in a high pressure chase knows that's the way to run and that the goalkeeper shouldn't panic but take that groove and lays the ball out between the wickets runners. He struck 50 runs in just 25 balls and that's the quickest 50 in his 19 years of the IPL 2026!

Tim David was also vital in providing much needed support with the vital rate kept under control at the end. Finally it was Kohli's time who struck when he came up with the brace, getting unbeaten on 75 off 42 balls (with 3 sixes and nine fours) and a strike rate of 178.57. It was the second time for RCB to claim the title.

A Dynasty Takes Shape

MI (2019-20) and CSK (2010-11) had previously won their IPL crowns on the trot – and this team became the third franchise in a row to do so – the first since the battle for IPL Match  supremacy began today. This was the bottom achievement club of the competition just 5 years ago and they now retain themselves alongside their famous dynasties. The heavy trophy was hoisted high by Rajat Patidar as the players charged him from behind as they got on the dais and the captain at the press conference praised his bowlers stating "the execution was a masterclass in planning". He claimed the team did not rely on the shoulders of a single player. He was not incorrect in his claims that Kohli and his teammates were 'the story'. The truth though, some stories just do have identifiable lead characters, and in this story that individual was nothing else but Kohli. Now, RCB has two cups.
